In 200 Words: Ambiguous Desire - Arlo Parks

Arlo Parks’ Ambiguous Desire arrived after a pause in her career and feels like a debrief of that time away. Inspired by nightlife and the club culture she experienced during this break, the album leans into a dreamy, soft sound that plays into her strengths, though rarely pushing boundaries.

Tracks like Blue Disco and Get Go read almost like short stories, placing listeners directly in the middle of late night scenes and conversations. There is a strong sense of observation throughout, with Parks choosing to describe rather than dissect, letting moments unfold without overexplaining them.

“I wish I had the language to tell you how this feels,” Parks says on Heaven, a line that feels like a thesis for the album’s approach.

Heaven, 2SIDED and Nightswimming come closest to capturing the energy that the album hints at and feels the most representative of her vision. These tracks bring a lighter, more dance-driven feel that suggests the freedom she experienced during this time, even if that feeling is not fully sustained across the project.

For a project framed as a shift in sound and perspective, it ends up feeling a bit too safe, even if it remains a cohesive and enjoyable listen overall.
